Youth involvement in education can be a powerful force for change. This was clearly demonstrated by Ear Kimse, a high school senior from CIA FIRST International School, who recently completed a one-month volunteer placement at OrbRom Center in Phnom Penh. His commitment to inclusive education and support for children with special needs serves as an inspiring example of what passionate young individuals can contribute to Cambodia’s education landscape.
A Meaningful Summer of Service
Kimse reached out to OrbRom Center with a clear and heartfelt goal: to gain experience working with neurodiverse children while supporting teachers and staff during his school break. His genuine interest in special education and inclusive practices quickly made him a valued part of the preschool program.
During his month of service, Kimse worked side-by-side with teachers to support children in classroom routines, group activities, and play-based learning. He brought calm energy, patience, and curiosity to every task—qualities that resonated with both the children and the educators he supported.
Hands-On Learning in a Specialized Setting
OrbRom Center specializes in providing services for children with special needs, including autism, ADHD, and developmental delays. For a student like Kimse, this setting offered a rare opportunity to experience inclusive education in action.
Throughout his placement, he gained firsthand insights into the daily structure of a special education classroom. From assisting with transitions and behavior support to observing speech and occupational therapy strategies, Kimse’s time at OrbRom gave him a strong foundation in child development and inclusive teaching methods.
Recognition and Gratitude
At the end of his placement, OrbRom Center held a small ceremony to honor Kimse’s contribution. He received a certificate of appreciation and warm congratulations from the staff, recognizing not just his efforts, but the compassion and respect he showed to the children.
His presence helped create smoother classroom routines and brought additional support to teachers, allowing them to focus more deeply on individualized instruction.
Why Youth Volunteering Matters
Kimse’s story is a powerful reminder that inclusive education is not just the responsibility of professionals—it’s a community effort. When young people are given opportunities to learn, support, and contribute, they become part of a larger movement toward a more inclusive and understanding society.
In Cambodia, where special education services are still developing, volunteers like Kimse play an important role in expanding awareness and support for children with diverse learning needs.
Inspiring the Next Generation
By stepping forward and volunteering his time, Ear Kimse showed that youth can lead with heart, initiative, and purpose. His story inspires other students in Cambodia to look for ways to get involved in education—not just as learners, but as active contributors.
We commend Kimse for his hard work and encourage other schools and learning centers across Phnom Penh to open their doors to youth who want to make a difference.
