The Ponheary Ly Foundation (PLF) continues to make impactful strides in student empowerment, and a recent mentorship session at Knar Village Learning Center is a perfect example. PLF mentor Chiminh, a certified Anglophile and recent English graduate, brought a wave of motivation and guidance to Grade 7–10 students through his personal journey with the English language.

Chiminh: From Learner to Mentor

Chiminh’s story is one that resonates deeply with students in rural Cambodia. Having graduated with an English degree just last year, Chiminh now teaches at the well-known NGO Teach For Cambodia in Phnom Penh. During his session at Knar Village, he shared how English transformed his life by opening doors to education, employment, and personal growth.

Rather than focusing solely on grammar or textbooks, Chiminh highlighted the human side of language learning—how it connects people, empowers dreams, and builds confidence. His authentic storytelling sparked curiosity and ambition in the students, many of whom are just beginning to explore what English fluency might bring into their lives.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom

What made the session particularly powerful was Chiminh’s relatable and grounded advice. He encouraged students to befriend books, engage in self-study, and actively listen to their teachers. His own learning process was built on perseverance, reading, writing, and speaking English in real-world contexts—proof that students in any setting, including rural Cambodia, can achieve fluency and success.

One student reflected on the session by quoting Chiminh:
“I will practice more writing, reading and speaking skills, keep studying, be friend with the book, learning from others, do self study, pay attention in listening to the teachers and work hard to gain more knowledge to challenge myself to achieve my goals.”

This clear sense of purpose and actionable guidance left a lasting impression on the students, who were visibly inspired to take ownership of their learning journey.

The Power of Role Models in Education

Mentorship like Chiminh’s is critical for communities like Knar Village, where access to positive educational role models is limited. His presence showed students what’s possible when they stay committed to their goals. It also emphasized that English is not just an academic subject—it is a life-changing tool.

Programs like these underscore the Ponheary Ly Foundation’s holistic approach to education. By providing academic support and connecting students with relatable mentors, PLF bridges the gap between aspiration and achievement. The mentorship session wasn’t just about language—it was about expanding possibilities.
