As part of the Villa Marguerite Duras residency program, the Institut Français du Cambodge recently welcomed French author Sébastien Berlendis for a series of engaging writing workshops. These sessions, designed for both students and teachers of French as a Foreign Language, were held in collaboration with the Department of Francophone Studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL).
Exploring Memory Through Creative Writing
Participants were invited to respond to the thought-provoking prompt: “If you could keep only one memory, what would it be?” Through this exercise, students and educators alike explored the depth of memory, identity, and emotion, all while sharpening their French language and writing skills.
The workshops provided a valuable space for creativity, exchange, and inspiration—highlighting the role of the French language as not just a medium of instruction, but a tool for self-expression and artistic exploration. Sébastien Berlendis guided participants through a reflective process that encouraged personal storytelling and literary development.
Promoting Cultural and Linguistic Engagement
This initiative reflects the Institut Français’s broader mission to support language learning and cultural dialogue through immersive, real-world experiences. By bringing together French-language learners and professionals in a shared creative space, the workshops celebrated the richness of francophone culture in Cambodia and promoted a deeper connection between language and lived experience.
The collaboration with the Royal University of Phnom Penh and IFL underscores the importance of partnerships in promoting educational and artistic endeavors across borders.
