Recently, our Grade 4 and 6 students from AUPP Primary School participated in an educational and deeply meaningful field trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Chamkar Mon district, Phnom Penh. This visit provided our students with valuable historical insights and an opportunity to reflect on Cambodia’s history.

Learning from History: Understanding the Khmer Rouge Period

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, once known as S-21, served as a detention, interrogation, and imprisonment center during the Pol Pot regime. During their visit, students explored exhibits and heard stories that vividly depicted the dark period of Cambodian history from the 1970s to the 1980s under Democratic Kampuchea.

Through guided tours and discussions, our students gained a better understanding of the atrocities that took place and the devastating impact of war on the nation.

Meeting Survivors and Honoring Lives

One of the most impactful parts of the visit was meeting survivors who shared their personal stories and experiences. This interaction provided our students with a human connection to the historical events, making their learning experience more profound. Additionally, our students and staff expressed their condolences to the victims, their families, and all innocent lives lost during this tragic era.

Engaging Activities for Reflection

Throughout the day, students engaged in activities designed to deepen their understanding of the museum’s exhibits. They had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, share reflections, and express their learnings in creative ways.

This field trip was not only an educational experience but also a lesson in empathy and compassion, encouraging our students to appreciate the value of peace and unity in today’s society.
