At the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP), teamwork, appreciation, and unity are not just words—they’re a lived experience. This spirit was on full display during AUPP’s recent staff retreat to Kompot and Kep, a multi-day trip designed to celebrate the efforts of the university’s faculty and staff while reinforcing the bonds that keep the AUPP community thriving.

This annual retreat is more than just a getaway—it is a tradition that honors collaboration, values team spirit, and creates shared memories among the university’s dedicated professionals. From outdoor activities to heartfelt talent shows, the trip embodied the inclusive and vibrant culture that AUPP is known for.

Strengthening Bonds Through Purposeful Activities

The retreat kicked off with an eco-conscious activity—tree planting at Trapeang Sangkae. This symbolic and impactful gesture reflected AUPP’s values of sustainability, environmental awareness, and giving back to the community. By getting their hands in the soil together, faculty and staff not only contributed to reforestation but also reinforced their shared commitment to creating lasting change, both in and out of the classroom.

Following the tree planting, the team took part in a series of team-building games. These friendly and often humorous competitions weren’t just about winning—they were about problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, all essential qualities in a collaborative academic environment.

The games were followed by a gala dinner where laughter, recognition, and camaraderie filled the room. But one of the most memorable moments of the evening came from the faculty and staff talent show, where colleagues showcased their musical, artistic, and comedic talents in a festive atmosphere that celebrated the human side of higher education.

Exploring Kep and Kampot: Shared Adventures and Local Flavor

The AUPP team also enjoyed exploring some of Cambodia’s natural and cultural treasures, with visits to a durian farm and the scenic areas of Kep West. These leisurely experiences gave the staff a chance to unwind and bond in informal settings, strengthening relationships that will carry over into their professional collaboration on campus.

From sampling local delicacies to taking in the sights of Cambodia’s southern coast, every moment of the trip reflected AUPP’s belief in balancing hard work with shared joy. It was a reminder that nurturing a strong internal culture is essential to delivering excellence in higher education.

Building a Stronger AUPP Community

This staff trip served as a shining example of how AUPP continues to prioritize its people. Recognizing that a supportive team environment translates directly into better outcomes for students, the university invests in these bonding moments to foster loyalty, trust, and open communication.

By bringing together faculty and staff outside the university’s walls, AUPP cultivates a culture of appreciation, cross-departmental collaboration, and mutual respect. This strong foundation not only enhances the daily work environment but also aligns with AUPP’s mission to prepare students to thrive in a global society.

AUPP: Where Unity Meets Purpose

The staff retreat to Kampot and Kep was more than a vacation—it was a celebration of shared purpose and a reaffirmation of AUPP’s core values. The joy, laughter, and cooperation displayed throughout the trip are the same qualities that define the AUPP experience for students and staff alike.

With each passing year, AUPP continues to grow stronger not just through academic excellence but through unity, empathy, and community. As the photos of the retreat clearly show, when people thrive together, they create something truly special.
