Singapore Cambodia International Academy (SCIA) recently celebrated a major achievement when three of its students – Chea Davanniza, Leng Phosahtey, and Hu Chhincy – represented Cambodia at the 39th China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest (CASTIC) in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. This prestigious event, held from August 15–19, brought together over 600 talented youth from 24 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, South America, Oceania, and Europe.

Their project, “Turning Rice Straw Waste into Biodegradable Plastic,” not only highlighted their scientific skills but also reflected their deep concern for environmental sustainability.

About the Competition

CASTIC is widely recognized as one of the largest platforms for young innovators. It encourages students worldwide to demonstrate creativity, problem-solving, and scientific thinking. By competing on this stage, SCIA students proudly showcased Cambodian innovation in front of an international audience, proving that young Cambodians can stand shoulder to shoulder with global peers.

The students’ project tackled a pressing environmental issue: agricultural waste management. Rice straw is often burned in Cambodia, leading to pollution. Their idea to transform this waste into biodegradable plastic offered a potential solution that aligns with sustainable development goals.

SCIA’s Commitment to Holistic Education

This achievement reflects SCIA’s philosophy of holistic education and its dedication to going beyond classroom learning. By empowering students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, the school fosters not only academic excellence but also creativity, innovation, and social responsibility.

SCIA integrates the Cambridge curriculum with values-driven education, ensuring students are well-prepared for both higher education and the challenges of the future. The success of Chea Davanniza, Leng Phosahtey, and Hu Chhincy is a testament to SCIA’s supportive environment where students are encouraged to pursue ambitious goals.

Inspiring Future Generations

For parents and educators in Cambodia, this milestone demonstrates the opportunities available when schools combine strong academic frameworks with hands-on learning. SCIA’s participation in CASTIC shows how Cambodian students can make meaningful contributions to global conversations about sustainability, science, and innovation.

It also serves as an inspiration for other schools to encourage project-based learning and participation in international competitions. By doing so, students not only build confidence and problem-solving skills but also develop a sense of responsibility toward their communities and the environment.

Conclusion

The participation of Singapore Cambodia International Academy students at the 39th CASTIC was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of Cambodian talent, innovation, and the future of sustainable science. Their project on biodegradable plastics sets an example of how young learners can create impactful solutions when given the right guidance and opportunities.
