UNICEF Cambodia, in close partnership with the Ministry of Rural Development, has once again stepped in to meet urgent needs—this time delivering essential hygiene supplies to nearly 1,990 displaced families in Pursat province. The distribution took place on July 29, 2025, in response to a growing demand for clean water and basic health necessities among vulnerable communities.

The affected families, many with young children, are based in Veal Veng district and the Thma Da area—regions that have recently faced environmental and social challenges leading to displacement. In these situations, rapid response and access to basic hygiene play a critical role in preventing disease and protecting community health.

What Was Delivered and Why It Matters

The aid kits delivered include buckets, soap, cleaning agents, and other essential hygiene materials. These supplies are vital for controlling health risks, especially in overcrowded or temporary living conditions. Poor sanitation and lack of clean water significantly increase the likelihood of waterborne illness, particularly among children and the elderly.

This joint delivery from UNICEF Cambodia and the Ministry of Rural Development highlights not only the strength of collaboration between government and international organizations but also the commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind during crises. The timing and scope of the intervention were designed to address immediate needs while paving the way for continued support.

Why Pursat? Understanding the Local Context

Pursat province, especially Veal Veng and Thma Da, has faced repeated disruptions due to seasonal flooding, limited infrastructure, and displacement from land-related issues. These communities are often far from centralized services and are among the least resourced in Cambodia.

Targeting these areas shows a data-informed approach by UNICEF and the Ministry—prioritizing communities based on risk level, vulnerability, and access gaps. Delivering directly to 1,990 families means thousands of individuals—many of them children—can stay healthy and safe.

A Model for Coordinated Relief Efforts in Cambodia

This operation stands as a model of responsive governance and NGO coordination in Cambodia. It demonstrates how international support can work effectively with local ministries to implement scalable, people-focused aid. It also emphasizes the importance of preparedness and community-based health strategies.

Efforts like this should be recognized, replicated, and integrated into broader disaster and displacement response policies. As UNICEF Cambodia continues to expand its reach, the value of rapid, equitable delivery of health essentials cannot be overstated.
